彼得·勃鲁盖尔，16世纪尼德兰地区最伟大的画家。一生以农村生活作为艺术创作题材，人们称他为“农民的勃鲁盖尔”。他善于思想，天生幽默，喜爱夸张的艺术造型，因此人们又赠给他一个外号叫“滑稽的勃鲁盖尔”。他继承了博斯的艺术风格，又被誉为“新博斯”。他是欧洲美术史上第一位“农民画家”。彼得·勃鲁盖尔是自扬·凡·艾克开始的刊期荷兰画派的最后一位巨匠。

The Fight between Carnival and Lent,1559

彼得·勃鲁盖尔1525年出生于安特卫普东部的一个农民家庭，曾从学于P.库克·凡·阿尔斯特，此人的妻子可能教过他在细亚麻布上画水彩的方法。

Netherlandish Proverbs,1559

1550年，库克·凡·阿尔斯特去世，勃鲁盖尔到安特卫普画家、出版家H.科克处工作。科克系风景画家，兼经营画店，曾刻版印行勃鲁盖尔的作品，并与之长期合作。
1551年，勃鲁盖尔成为安特卫普画家行会的画师，之后不久即取道法国去意大利作修业旅行。
1552年，到达意大利南部，渡海游西西里岛，到巴勒莫。

1553年，在罗马与著名的细密画家G.克洛维奥合作细密画（已失）。归途中，他还在意大利北部乡野和阿尔卑斯山漫游。从现存作品看，他的旅行写生主要为风景，其对自然的观察和描绘，甚为精细，可当日后创作素材之用。他在意大利所作《风景素描》（1552年，柏林，国立美术馆版画室），是最早有年代的作品。

勃鲁盖尔于1554年春踏上归途，1555年已在安特卫普为科克的画店印行大幅风景组画制作版画稿了。

1556年，勃鲁盖尔的创作开始从风景转向带有教育性和讽刺性的人物构图。他借鉴H.博斯的作品，采取幻想的和写实的形象相结合的表现方法，从民间谚语和传说中选取题材，寓严肃的主题于风趣的表现中。这变化反映了他对尼德兰社会问题的关心，其作品如铜版画《大鱼吃小鱼》（1557年，维也纳，阿尔贝蒂纳藏品）《谢肉祭和四旬斋的斗争》（1559年，维也纳，美术史博物馆）等，或对世道人情进行讽刺，或隐含对西班牙的暴虐统治的抗议。

勃鲁盖尔一方面为科克的画店提供版画稿，同时还从事绘画，大体上，1562年以前，多作版画，以后则主要致力于绘画。他重视对生活的观察和研究，常和友人到农村参加农民的活动，收集创作素材。

1563年，他和老师库克·凡·阿尔斯特的女儿结婚，移居布鲁塞尔，并在这里度过最后6年。此时正当尼德兰革命的前夜和爆发时期，他的艺术日臻成熟，以现实的人为中心，对自然和社会生活的描绘融为一体。他在作品中采取多种形式揭露西班牙军队和宗教法庭对尼德兰人民的残酷迫害并鼓舞人民进行斗争。
